Expert School Shoe Fittings at Donaghys, Banbridge
Most parents we meet at this time of year arrive with the same quiet worry: are these the right shoes, in the right size, that will see my child through to Christmas? It's a small question with a surprisingly long-running answer. Kids' feet grow at unpredictable rates, in width as well as length, and the difference between a shoe that fits properly and one that almost fits can show up later as blisters, sore knees, or a child who just doesn't want to go to school in the morning.
That's the gap our school shoe fitting service is built to close. It's expert, it's unhurried, and it's walk-in: turn up during opening hours and we'll see you. We've been fitting children's shoes in Banbridge since 1960, and the thing first-time customers most often tell us afterwards is some version of: I didn't know the process could be this calm.
In short: walk in any time during opening hours. Our experienced fitters will measure both your child's feet, check the width as well as the length, and find the right pair from across the brands we stock. You'll leave with shoes that genuinely fit, and the confidence that they do.
Why a proper fitting matters more than parents are usually told
It's tempting to think school shoes are simple: pick the right size, off you go. The reality is more nuanced. Children's feet vary considerably in shape: narrow, wide, high-arched, flat, longer on one side than the other. Most don't fit the standard mid-width that high-street and online sizes assume.
A shoe that's roughly the right length but wrong on width can cause:
- Blisters and rubbed patches that make wearing the shoes miserable
- A child who quietly walks differently to compensate, which over months can affect knees, hips and posture
- Premature wear on one side of the sole, shortening the useful life of the shoe
- Resistance to wearing the shoes at all, which most parents only spot when they're already in the school car park
None of these are dramatic. They're the kind of small thing that's easy to miss until you've seen it a thousand times, which, after more than six decades of fitting children's shoes, our team has.
What happens when you walk in
Here's exactly what to expect, so it doesn't feel like a mystery before you arrive.
1. We measure both feet, properly
Children's feet are rarely the same size. We measure both, in length and in width, with your child seated, which is how the measuring gauge is designed to be used. It's a small detail, but an accurate starting measurement is what the rest of the fitting is built on, and width is the part that home measuring and online size charts most often miss.

2. We talk through what we've found
If your child's feet are notably narrow, or wide, or one foot is half a size up on the other, we'll say so. We'll also flag anything that's likely to matter for the year ahead: a foot that's about to outgrow current shoes, an unusual arch shape, or a width that needs a particular brand to fit comfortably.
3. We pick from across the brands we stock
This is where having a wide range matters. We carry Clarks, Startrite, Geox, Skechers, Lelli Kelly and others, deliberately, because no single brand fits every foot shape. Some brands run narrower, some wider; some come in width fittings, some don't. We'll guide you to what's most likely to fit your child and make recommendations.
4. Your child tries them on. We watch them walk.
This is the bit that's hardest to do at home. We watch how the shoe sits on the foot, how the heel holds, whether there's any slipping, whether your child walks naturally or compensates. A pair of shoes can look fine on the shelf and behave differently on a walking foot. We won't put a shoe on a child and tick a box; we'll watch them take a walk and tell you what we see.
5. You leave with the right pair
Once we've found the pair that fits properly and your child is happy in them, we'll wrap them up at the till. That's the trip done, sorted for the term ahead, with no second-guessing whether the size is right or whether to order another pair to compare. If you'd like to add school socks, plimsolls or PE trainers to the same trip, the kids' department has all of those too.
Why this matters: a fitting takes time, usually 15 to 20 minutes for one child, because rushing it is how children end up in the wrong shoes. We'd rather take the time and get it right than have you back in three weeks with sore feet.
When to come in
Most parents who walk in are in one of these five situations. If any of them sounds familiar, that's the prompt.
- Your child is starting school for the first time. The first proper school-shoe fitting sets up the next few years.
- Your child has had a noticeable growth spurt. Trousers suddenly short? Shoes are probably too small now too.
- Your child is complaining about discomfort in shoes that look fine. Something subtle is usually off, whether it's width, arch, or heel shape, and a fitter will spot it in minutes.
- It's the start of a new school year. Whether your child is starting Reception, P1, going up to senior school, or just back from the summer holidays, fresh shoes that fit properly are the foundation of the term.
- You suspect your child has wider, narrower, or unusually shaped feet. Most kids' shoes don't come in width fittings unless you know which brands to look at.
A quick sense-check before you come: stand your child up in their current shoes and press the front with your thumb. If you can feel the toe right at the end, or there's noticeable pressure across the widest part of the foot, the shoes are done. Come in.
And if you're not sure either way, that's also a reason to come. Most parents who walk in are quietly hoping someone else will tell them whether it's time. We will.
How to make the visit go smoothly
A few practical things that make a difference, especially at busier times of year.
- Bring the school socks they'll actually wear. Fitting in trainer socks gives a different result; school socks vary in thickness, and that affects fit.
- Come at quieter times if you can. Weekday mornings are usually relaxed. Saturdays in August are the busy end: still walk-in, but expect a wait.
- Allow enough time. A single child's fitting takes 15 to 20 minutes, and longer if you have more than one to fit. Don't squeeze it into a tight gap.
- Have your child wear something they can move easily in. Walking around the shop is part of the fitting, so they need to be able to.
- Bring an idea of budget if you have one. We can fit within most ranges, and we'd rather know upfront than show you something that's not realistic.
Back-to-school period (mid-July to late August) is our busiest time. You're welcome to walk in any time, that's the whole point, but if you have flexibility, the second half of July and the last week of August tend to be calmer than the school-uniform-shopping fortnight in mid-August.
Why we do it this way
Worth being clear about what this service is. The fitting is part of buying school shoes from us. It's the expert side of the transaction, the bit that justifies coming to a specialist instead of clicking through Amazon. There's no separate fee, but it isn't a measurement-only service either. What a fitting is for is finding the right pair from across the brands we stock, and walking out with them on your child's feet.
Fitting children's shoes since 1960 has taught us that this is what parents actually want: not just a measurement, but to leave with shoes that genuinely fit. That's the trip done.
What we stock for school
So you know roughly what's available before you arrive.
- Clarks: the classic. Wide range from infant first shoes through to senior school styles, with width fittings on many models. Strong choice for medium-to-narrow feet.
- Startrite: particularly good for younger primary kids and for harder-to-fit foot shapes, with whole and half sizes and multi-width fittings. Reliable, durable, with a strong heritage in growing feet.
- Geox: known for breathable construction and a slightly different fit than Clarks, often suiting children who find Clarks pinch.
- Skechers: popular with primary kids; some schools allow them as everyday shoes. Lighter, more trainer-like in feel.
- Lelli Kelly: distinctive and well-made; often the favourite for younger girls who want a bit of personality.
We also carry school PE trainers, plimsolls and back-to-school socks, useful to know if you're trying to do the whole list in one trip. The kids' department is on the ground floor of the Banbridge store, well signed.

Frequently asked questions
Do I pay extra for the fitting?
No. The fitting is part of buying school shoes from us, and the price you pay is the price of the shoes you choose. Our experienced fitters spend the time it takes (usually 15 to 20 minutes) to measure properly and find the right pair from across the brands we stock.
Do I need to book in advance?
No. The fitting service is walk-in only: turn up during opening hours and we'll see you. We've kept it that way deliberately so parents can come in when it suits them, including last-minute Saturday-morning visits when something's gone wrong.
What ages do you fit?
From first walking shoes (usually around 12 to 18 months) right through to senior school. Our experienced fitters cover the full kids' range, and there's no upper age limit. If a teenager wants a fitting, they're welcome too.
How long does a fitting take?
Usually 15 to 20 minutes, depending on how many pairs your child wants to try. During the back-to-school rush there can be a short wait at the busiest times, but we don't rush the fitting itself.
What if I have more than one child to fit?
Bring them all. We'll fit them in turn, and a parent with two or three children at fittings is a normal day for us. It does take longer, around 15 to 20 minutes per child, so come in slightly outside the busiest hours if you can. Worth doing it all in one trip.
What if my child has wider or narrower feet than average?
We can usually find something. Brands like Clarks come in width fittings (F, G, H), and our fitters know which brands run narrow or wide as standard. If your child has notably wide or narrow feet, mention it on the way in and we'll start with the brands most likely to work.
Do you offer fittings for autistic children or children with sensory needs?
Yes. During late July and August we run quiet nights at the Banbridge store: after-hours sessions once the shop has closed, calmer and quieter, where an experienced fitter can take the fitting at your child's pace. Sessions are by appointment only to allow us to ensure the perfect environment. Stay tuned to our social media or call us on 028 4066 2750 to find out the dates and plan the visit.
Do you fit shoes other than school shoes?
Yes. We fit kids' trainers, sandals, boots and first walking shoes year-round, not just school shoes. The same expert fitting applies whatever the season or the occasion. Many of our customers come in once for school shoes and find it's just easier to come back for the rest.
Where exactly is the kids' department?
Ground floor of the Donaghys store in Banbridge, well signed once you're inside, with on street parking and a Public Car Park to the rear on Commercial Road. We're open Monday to Saturday; full opening hours and directions are on our store location page.
