School Shoes: Your Questions Answered

Measure children's feet every 6–8 weeks for toddlers and pre-schoolers, and roughly every 3 months for older children, as little feet can grow up to two sizes a year. Our expert in-store fitting service at Donaghys, Banbridge can make sure your children are in the correct footwear

Most school shoes last around a term to 4–5 months, though this varies with growth spurts and how hard they're worn. Replace them when the toes reach the end, the heel or sole is worn down, fastenings no longer grip, or your child says they rub or pinch. Re-check the fit rather than waiting for complaints.

Both are hard-wearing real-leather options — it comes down to finish. Standard leather is more breathable and easy to re-polish, so it copes well with everyday scuffs. Patent leather has a shiny, wipe-clean surface that hides marks and looks smart, although deep scratches are harder to buff out. For very active children, styles with scuff-resistant toe bumpers wear best.

The sweet spot is early-to-mid August — a few weeks before term starts. Buy too early in the summer and fast-growing feet may have changed size by September; leave it too late and the best sizes and styles can sell out. Have your child's feet measured before you buy, as they can grow up to two sizes a year, and allow a little time to wear the shoes in before day one.

Look for real leather uppers, a supportive padded ankle, and a flexible, non-slip sole, plus an adjustable fastening (velcro, buckle or laces) for a secure hold. A proper width fitting and a growing room matter most for comfort and healthy foot development — our expert in-store fitting service at Donaghys, Banbridge takes the guesswork out.
